Haiku is a traditional Japanese form of poetry comprised of seventeen sounds or
syllables in a strict pattern of 5, 7, 5. A haiku also contains a reference to the
natural world, preferably dealing with a specific season. In the English form, a haiku
conveys a sometimes complex and strong emotion in a skeletal or raw form, devoid of
extraneous words. Haiku has been described as capturing a moment in time with words
that somehow convey more than what is apparent. It is an "Aha" moment - the clap of
hands, the clang of a bell. That moment of startling revelation is what the haiku
poet seeks.
The images in this gallery strive to achieve a similar simplicity of statement of
complex emotions and concepts using a visual language. The images are simple and
straightforward, often capturing everyday scenes that the observer is asked to see
again.
